biochemistborn in July 1, 1941 at New Haven, Connecticut. He shared the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Martin Rodbell for their discoveries regarding G-Proteins. Rodbell has shown in the 1960s that GTP was involved in cell signaling. He became a professor of pharmacology at University of Virginia and elected as a member of National Academy of Sciences in 1986. In addition to the Nobel Prize, he won the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Science Research as well as Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University in 1989 together with Edwin Krebs winner of Nobel Prize in medicine in 1992. He called the isolated\u00a0<a title=\"Alkaloid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alkaloid\">alkaloid<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;morphium&#8221; after the Greek god of dreams,\u00a0<a title=\"Morpheus (mythology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morpheus_(mythology)\">Morpheus<\/a>. He published a comprehensive paper on its isolation, crystallization, crystal structure, and pharmacological properties, which he studied first in stray dogs and then in self-experiments.\u00a0It was not only the first alkaloid to be extracted from opium, but the first ever\u00a0<a title=\"Alkaloid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alkaloid\">alkaloid<\/a>\u00a0to be isolated from any plant. Thus he became the first person to isolate the active ingredient associated with a\u00a0<a title=\"Medicinal plants\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medicinal_plants\">medicinal plant<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a title=\"Herb\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herb\">herb<\/a>.In 1809, Sert\u00fcrner opened his first own pharmacy in\u00a0<a title=\"Einbeck\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Einbeck\">Einbeck<\/a>. This research was very well recognized and a large number of awards were conferred on him. Prof Singh&#8217;s latest achievement was the establishment of a model private college of pharmacy (Indo-Soviet Friendship College of Pharmacy) at Moga, Punjab.
